Intermittent harsh 2-1 downshift. If left in sport mode the shift isn't present.

Topic is copied and pasted from a private seller of a 03 4.6is X5. I've had the same issue since earlier this year.

If I leave it in sports mode, the shift would be normal.

The harsh downshift is happening less now, but not because of anything I've done mechanically.

Typically when i'm slowing down nearing an intersection, towards the last 2 car lengths as the speed nears 0, the sudden jerk into first gear would happen.

It's not very harsh yet, just a sudden jerk from 2nd to 1st. I can minimize it if I brake early and let the car coast to a longer and slower stop.

I bought my 4.6is last march with 95,000 miles. The first thing I did was replace the transmission oil, filter, and the sump cover.

Does anyone know if this is a prelude to something worse to come for the transmission?

I think it's solinoid/valve related and common issue with a reasonable fix.

Hi Andrew, thanks for your quick and insightful reply. Do you have the part number to the solinoid?

No I just have driven an '04 that had the issue and was told it was the 2-1 solinoid. I've seen the valve body in videos and it is a non scary job.

If you take out a valve body to replace a solinoid first use a scan tool like mine (foxwell nt510) to measure the solinoid relative pressure (I think I can just read the volts or miliamp) to help determine which valves are failing. Then when you replace the ones that are failing replace ALL rubber parts inside. Some models have a rubber seal to the valve body but some it's just a flat metal surface.

Hi Andrew,

my x5 is an 03 model. The transmission is a 5 speed instead of the 6 speed from the 04 model. Do you know if the 03 transmission uses the solenoids as well?

They are all similar. My transmission acted strange including slam shifts it turned out to be a connector filled with rusty water so first check that situation.
