Test steering column adjuster motors

I have the seemingly common problem in my 2003 E53 X5 where the steering column and seat motors started clicking without moving the seat or steering column much. I guessed it was the seat memory module. Now without doing anything, the seat now works fine but the steering column won’t adjust at all.
Is there a way I can test the steering column motors my connecting them directly to a 12v source to see if they work ok? Does it need me to take off all the trim under the steering column or is there a quick way?
If I can move the steering column to where i want it I might just leave it there - at the moment it’s too high.
