Ignition switch which one is the right one

Gentlemen,

I opened a thread about a month ago with major electrical gremlins lurking and many have said my problems could be attributed to the ignition switch. I will try changing such switch but my question now becomes whats the difference between the 9 point switch and the 11 point switch. Does either offer anything more??? ( besides the obvious 2 extra points) both the Febi-Bilstein and the Genuine switches have the same 6132-690-1962 number but again some carry 9 points and some 11. Whats the advantage in the 11 point? And which do you recommend for the X5 2003 4.6? I've found Febi switches with 9 and 11 and Genuine with 9 and 11 points also.

INstead of using the "FEBI" part number...use one of the online part databases...type in the last 7 digits of your VIN...the look up the ignition switch. If you are not familiar with any online part database sites...below are 3 of my favs:
  1. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select
  2. BMWfans.info
  3. https://bimmercat.com

This will give you the correct part number that you need for your X5. If there is an additional part number...it will be listed with supplemental information that will allow you to select/know what the differences are for use of the alternate part.

Less mistakes are made when you use the correct 11 digit BMW part number than shopping generically or using other manufacturer part nbrs.

Thanks QSilver7 for your response however realoem suggest the same part # 6132-690-1962. So I have the right part and the right part # but it lends to a 9 post or an 11 post part. whether Febi or Genuine or some other manufacturer.

It seems there is a bit of variation on this switch from year to year, i.e.

I suggest you open yours up and check what type you have before ordering one....

Instead of spending money on the switch. Open it up. Clean contacts with sand paper. Put it back in. Yes lots of electrical issues when they go. But that’s how I fixed mine in a pinch.
