Sliding Rear Cargo Load Floor Bushing Fail
One of the features that I really love about my E53 has always been the moveable rear cargo load floor. It has made loading items very convenient without a lot of reaching over the tailgate to get things in the forward most position. The forward part of the load floor is supported and held in place by a trio (I think) of metal bearings or bushings on each side of the floor that ride on a rail on each side, while the rear of the floor slides on a "V" notch that rides in a fixed roller near the tailgate.. Recently, the driver side bearing/bushings have slid out of their nest in the load floor which renders the load floor unable to slide on the round rails. I can place the bearings/bushings back into their bracket/nest of the load floor but I do not see how they are kept rigidly inside this load floor bracket. Upon the next attempt to slide the load floor they slide out of position and the load floor is once again inop for sliding. I have looked at Real OEM parts guide and have found the load floor part diagram but do not see any detail relating to the load floor bracket which holds the bushing/bearing in place underneath the load floor. Has anyone experienced this issue and if so, how did you solve it so as to have a functioning/sliding load floor again? I will have pics later on this to show the detail of the failure. Thanks, Mike

Here is a shot of the bushings/bearings beginning to make their way out of their nest. I do have the front and rear rubber pieces which have 4 teets that are pressed into the front and rear of the nest, but there is no way that these little rubber pieces (bumpers actually) provide any holding force fore and aft for the bushing/bearings , so something else must hold them in and I have't found any broken remnants of anything else Here is the passenger side which remains functional. Note the bumpers are in place My next move is to completely remove the rolling cargo floor section and do some surgery on the upside down piece to see what is going on. Meanwhile, anyone with familiarity with this issue, please chime in. Thanks, Mike

That small "divet" on the top of the bushing is meant for the tip of a set screw - there must be some set screws meant to hold the bush in place that has loosened off. Once you remove the assembly from the car to get a better look, it should be obvious.

When I tear it out of there and am able to make a much closer inspection, I may make more headway on the problem with the mechanism. Mike

My thoughts:
- take a small flat piece of aluminum and cut it just as wide as the receiver block on the load floor - cut the arch of the guide rod in to it (centered) - mark the location of the two top holes - drill the holes in the aluminum - fill the holes in the receiver block with light weight construction adhesive - push two small machine screws through the holes in the aluminum plate in to the construction adhesive - clamp and let sit over night Best part, it's removable in the future, you can back the screws out and easily drill out the adhesive if you'd ever want to.. OH - and put one of those little rubber bumpers on it from the back of a cabinet door :-) |

After completely removing the sliding load floor from the rear cargo area and turning it upside down, I was able to see what I thought was a set screw in the side of the body where the bushing/bearing was fitted.
As it turned out it was a ROLL PIN that had worked its way out. Re-fitted the bushing/bearing and tapped the roll pin back in with a dose of Loctite 222 for good measure and we're back in business with one of my favorite features of my E53 Mike
