exhaust smell in the car

Hi
I have a X5 e53 2004 mod, when I stand still with the engine running then I am bothered with exhaust smell in the car, can not find any leak in the exhaust system but have heard others who are bothered with the same problem, this is a weakness on these cars or does anyone have any suggestions what it comes from?

When my exhaust manifold was cracked, I had this same symptom. Have you still got the factory stainless exhaust manifold? If so, it's probably gone....

Thanks Wpoll :-) it may also explain why it goes a bit uneven at 2000-3000 rpm and turbo kicks in late

It may well....

There are at least three ways to replace the manifold: -

1. from above. Requires removal of the valve cover, which requires removal on the intake manifold and all the injectors.

2. from below. Requires removal of the reinforcing plate and exhaust system.

3. from the side. Requires removing less major items but you need the hands and dexterity of a gynaecologist...

I used #3, because I hadn't seen anyone do it this way before and felt sure it could be done. It can.

Needed a few special tools etc. but it's all outlined in the thread I linked above. I'll try to get some time to replace the images later today... at least on the post showing the final work (post #39) ...
