thx Andrew

Do you know the difference between what was called "second level scanner" and being a "bi-directional scanner" I didn't find these terms in the description when I ordered the 520.

usualky means will scan brand specific codes. They don't usually say the phrase. Bi-directional means it will actually send commands to the car.

The NT520 is both 2nd level and bi-directional. (In addition to being able to send active commands like "roll down right front window, can also program idle speed etc).

cool. thx, andrew for the info. looking forward to the scanner's arrival.

Do you know if the bentley manual for the X5 is available in pdf form? I've got the owners manual in pdf, but so many refer to the bentley, I thought I'd check it out, too, since it probably will be very handy for the do-it-yourself-er like me.

spent a lot of time looking for the bentley with zero success, however i found a very useful pdf service manual on eBay for like $13; it's like 3500 pages, proper pdf (not a scan), seachable and has most of the repairs i've needed to look up to date. It's specific to the year and i have an 2001; look on eBay.

The pdf ones on ebay I found in that price range have buyer reviews stating the manual didn't cover cooling system (one said it didn't cover air conditioning system either). Does yours have these sections in it? Just so happens the cooling system is of major interest to me right now.

this one looks like the identical manual to mine: https://ebay.us/esfcOD

if you look at the preview images you can see how you can browse the manual by topic, i just browsed the cooling system and it shows how to repair the under the hood parts like the aux cooling pump and valves and the inside parts like the climate control panel.

thx andrew I know you'd said yours was like 3500 pages, and this one seems to have 4480 pages looking at the sample images. I notice the new bentley hardback at $95 has 1240 pages. Just by those numbers, the pdf would have a lot more content anyway. It's funny how they all claim to be the official shop manual used by dealers. I figure a lot of them are the same pdf document.
