Special trick to removing the brake fluid reservoir screen?

I tried grabbing it with pliers, but it just gouges into the plastic.
Any special trick?

The can be really hard to get out but reading on some forums led me to this. "I took a pair of needle-nose pliers and twisted and pulled with an uncomfortable amount of force and it came out."

I just flushed my brake fluid and tried to pull the filter as well but didn't want to break it so I left it in and used the turkey baster to pull out as much as I could without removing the filter and started from there with a pressure bleeder.

- Now I am curious why you want to remove the mesh?

On my E46, I wanted to pull as much of the old DOT 3 brake fluid out as possible before the flush with DOT 4 660 fluid with new calipers and lines. But it didn't want to come out easily so I bailed out and pulled as much as I could with the filter in. I went around the car 3 times with my pressure bleeder and it was all fresh fluid coming out of all 4 corners in the end.

Oh I see,

When I bleed brake fluid, this is what I do...

1. Syringe to suck old brake fluid out.
There will be a tiny bit remaining below the mesh, no big deal.
Add new fluid.

2. Then use air compressor to bleed (compressor set at 10 psi).
About 10 years ago, I made an ATE cap just for bleeding.
Detail below.

DIY: 1-man Hydraulic Bleeding Kit for those with Air Compressor!

I like the Motiv but I don't want to clean its container with brake fluid.

With the ATE cap I made, once I am done with bleeding, I simply wipe the cap (hardly any fluid on it), and store it away. I have been using this cap for 10 years. It has made brake bleeding so simple. Nothing to clean afterwards.

Yeah, that is a easier cleanup for sure. I just left the remaining brake fluid in the bottle and set it on the shelf but would prefer if it was totally clean again.

I left the screen alone.

A friend wanted to test drive my X3 so I used him to do the pedal.
I did about 15 pumps on each rear, and 5 pumps on each front.

Total brake fluid expelled was like 4 ounces total.
Not even one reservoir worth.
I don't even think I refilled the reservoir even once.
I have absolutely no idea how people use up an entire bottle.
I could do 50 pumps per wheel, and still barely make a dent in the bottle.

Probably a total waste of time, but who cares.
Brakes worked fine before, and they still work after.

Beer !
