Talking 2002 E53 3.0i Intermittent no crank/start

So i’ve looked around the forums a bit and haven’t really seen anybody talking about the issue i’m having. If I may have missed it, feel free to link the forum below. I’ve got a 02 E53 3.0i with 175k miles. The issue started around the same time last year (December in Maryland) and pretty much stopped around the spring so I haven’t fully ruled out the cold but i’d prefer not to have to deal with this everytime it gets moderately cold. I’ve found a way of dealing with it, which i’ll mention soon. What happens when I get in the car and try to turn the key, turns all the way, all of my dash lights come on, interior lights work, hell even my stereo, amp and sub work but it doesn’t crank, it makes one single click when I turn the key completely. The way i’ve found around it is to pop the trunk, unhook my sub, open the spare/battery hatch and lightly tug on the positive cable, it doesn’t always work after one light tug but it always eventually will allow me to go back and turn the key and it’ll start right up. Before anyone asks, no the terminal is not loose, it doesn’t budge on the battery even a bit. I don’t believe it’s a faulty BST (am I getting that right? it is a BST correct?) because as far as I know the vehicles never been in an accident. Does anyone have any ideas? I will say I haven’t checked any fuses yet... probably should have

Have you measured voltage of your battery ? How new is it? Sounds a little like the battery has deteriorated inside. I had a car once where you could only start it if you jiggled the battery..In that case it was time for a new battery.

I have not measured it yet, it’s snowing pretty badly out right now so once it dies down i’ll go out and check.

It’s a common issue for the e53 ignition switch to fail with those symptoms.

I know this and i’ve come across it here on the forums multiple times but would it really work again after wiggling the cable? that doesn’t make sense to me.

I missed the query about the BST. You can determine if it’s bst by measuring voltage from B+ to ground under the hood before and after the tug.

If you have no voltage at B+ before tug and after you have voltage it’s the BST.

BST could only act like this if not activated by an accident. The BST when blown has barbs that prevent the contact from closing.

Okay! Guess i’ll keep a voltmeter on me for now until it happens again

quick question, would it be acceptable to check at the B+ in the engine bay?

That’s where you have to test it. If the BST opens there will be no per there.

Caveat: it’s possible to just become high resistance and you’ll still read voltage until you attempt to pull current so if at first you read voltage, then check while attempting to crank

Mine does the same thing. I just turn the key off and try again and it always spins the starter the second time. So I'm thinking probably the switch. At my mileage, I can't complain.
