happy 2020 & hood latch issue

hello to all, ok pulling on the hood lever in foot well does pop the hood but when trying to close hood it just won't, so I went back into the car i saw that the hood lever is in the same position as it was when i pull on it to release hood, lever is up a few cm's, not sure if it should retract down to original position (closed) or not after popping hood?

Only way i found i could close the hood was to push back the release lever/handle to original position prior to be pulling on it to release hood and the hood would close....

I will of course try to get round to lubing anything i can see, but not today cos wife and kids would throw a wobbly me spending new years day on an x5 niggly issue... happy nu year to all

The cable is seizing. The one from the lever to to the first latch(there are two).My 02 is like that now.I just use a small screw driver to pry the latching mechanisms back.Give the hood a good reef to make sure it's latched after you close it.Cable looks like a bitch to change so it'll have to wait until spring.

Thanks for reply, i managed to fiddle about, lubed what i could see but same thing basically pulling the release lever in the footwell releases hood , and lever in footwell stays raised ,should it? Or should it go back down? Always bern like this i have to say, looking into the holes where the hood posts engage i cannot see the 2-3mm of metal that would engage with the posts to lock hood down....when i push the hood release lever back to its resting position in the car i can then see in the 'locking holes' the 2 3mm of metal, and hence can close hood fine....

I will be doing my hood cables this weekend so I will let you know how it goes, but in the meantime go to your cable and you will find what looks like an inline fuse holder open the plastic cover (gently) and check for corrosion and spray a good amount of silicone lubricant up each sides cable sheathing. This will buy you some time and keep from popping the cable when it hangs up as it is a whole front end teardown to get the hood open once that's happened...

Ok thanks for reply, this fuse holder type cover is in a visible part of cable and not tucked hidden away yes?

On my 4.4 it is right around the front left strut tower, right along where the fender bolts to the UniBody

It's next to the heater control valve and enters near the steering column (LHD)

Since cars in Cyprus are RHD, the cable joint is on the right side fender, just in front of the washer bottle.

cheers mr. wpoll and happy trouble free X5 new year to all (if we are lucky)
out of curiosity when you pop hood via lever in footwell does the lever return back to 'closed' position?
