Are the X5/X3 less rust prone compared to other cars?

Are these cars particularly NOT rust-prone ? I looked at the underside of my X3 and it looks pretty darn clean for 10 years and 100k miles in the NE.

Of the 4700# empty weight of my 2001s, approximately 6# of that is rust. They are amazingly rust free. Due in large part to the quantity of parts that are aluminum in the chassis.

I removed about 1/4 of the rust on my truck when I replaced the rear brakes lines last year.

edit: I didn't see the mention of the brake lines above when I wrote this post. I'm being almost literal they are definitely the most rusty item on the car.

So, a good PM item is to just replace all brake lines?

I wouldn't bother but I would definitely treat them with rust treatment like naval jelly and the coat with maybe Rust-Oleum paint.

Find my thread on replacing rear brake lines. It shows exactly where to expect failure. Treat that spot you'll not need to replace them.

My mistake I hijacked somebody else's thread:

Panic Stop, now no brakes and Puddle of fluid?
