Means your DSC is disabled, probably due to a fault in the DSC/ABS system.

Could this be the transfer case gear?

Not likely - the gear failure normally presents as the "trifecta" of lights - 4x4/ABS/Brake.

You have to read codes. Can be a few things including the steering angle sensor or yaw rate sensor

Also happens after a dead battery or if you disconnect your battery. If that is the case start the truck and turn the steering lock to lock. That will clear it.

I occasionally got this when going round a left hand tight bend, turns out my front tyres were almost flat, pumped them up to spec and and didn't come back

It could be a variety of things, as others have stated.
In my case, my alternator was going out and I would get the 4x4 light on cold mornings. The problem was its module along with others weren't getting the correct voltage because the alternator didn't kick in until the engine warmed up. Best to get a scanner with the ability to see BMW trouble codes and live data from the modules. I got a Foxwell NT520 Pro. |

Mine did that. Got the codes cleared by my Indy for free. Was nothing. He said these older x53s will sometimes do that, more so in cold weather. Occasional it happens from time to time and just goes out. Last year, it came on but I also got a 4x4 inop message on screen. That turned out to be a bad yaw sensor. Was also told the steering angle sensor can go bad on these but again, sometimes a code clear fixes the issue.

Mine popped up the other day, on the first drive after fitting four new tyres. And no, it wasn't the FTM indicator, it was the 4x4 (DSC) indicator (yellow). Went out again after a restart and hasn't come back.
