You had a very specific vanos error bank 2; swap the solinoids all four from Bank 2&1 and see if the problrm migrates. Of course after to do the leak down and compression test (shoud not be a problem). Did you determine the source of the plastic bits and the chunk of steel?

the plastic pieces may be from the grommets in the valve covers; and the metal chunk looks like it could be a broken off tab at the end of the cam shafts. but none are broke off of mine now(maybe from a previous failure before I bought car. ill send you a pic Andrew since I'm not kool enough to be able to post pics here. lol I also ran the camera down both timing covers to the crank and all looks good. Many thanx btw for the hook up on that camera! it has been a valuable tool for my tool box.

also, I don't see any solenoids on the heads for the vanos at all. so I'm actually quite baffled on what moves the cams for the variable timing. and is drivers side bank 2 ?

Mom ran my X out of oil
On N62 the four solenoids stuck right out the front of the chain covers
Bank two is the LEFT/PORT side. Avoid using driver/passenger, at least a third of xo are right hand drive.

Did you do the remove/replace valvetronic motor setup with your Foxwell? I did when replacing mine but don't know if it's truly necessary (parks it in decompressed type mode) or something....

yup I finally found the solenoids. did leak down test yesterday and found #4 had 80% leakage. so I'm thinking bad rings. debating if I'm going to swap the motor or junk the truck.

If the DME turned off the cylinder you could just have enough dirt on the valve seat to give you that bad reading.
I would definitely swap bank 1 and 2 solenoids and see if you can get that vanos error to clear and get the engine to run long enough to get some cleaning agents though and maybe clean the valve seats.
