Exclamation And she's back again... Codes 67, E4 & E3 :wow:

I replaced the fan clutch, took the X5 (2002 - 3.0i, auto) for a ride to drop my Caddy off at the dealer. On the way back, I got a Check engine light.

Hooked up my scan tool and I have 3 concerning codes that sound really bad.

67 DME: VANOS Inlet Camshaft, end position not reached
E4 DME: Fuel Trim Bank 2, permissible range exceeded
E3 DME: Fuel Trim Bank 1, permissible range exceeded

Driving consisted of neighborhood roads to freeway (65mph max didn't beat on it).

Vehicle actually felt fine, I didn't detect any rough idle at stoplights or while I was in a drive through. Nothing seemed out of sorts. No sputtering, rough idle, no bad smell...

What do you guys recommend? It's been sitting for a few weeks, should I clear DTC codes and see if they come back immediately? or???

P codes seem to be P1519, P1188, P1189

Thanks so much!
Kala

Yes. I had a series of CEL codes — mostly fuel trim, ABS, even AUC sensor — pop up over this summer after I bought my X in May; I'd clear them and eventually they stopped. Haven't had a code thrown in months. I think it's from me driving the thing far more and harder than the prior owner. 4–5 800+mile road trips tend to shake things out!

Now I'm surely jinxed myself...

I hear ya… I just got the Bentley manual today. Maybe I’ll find something in there. It seems like if there was a fuel problem I’d be able to hear/feel a flutter on accel or popping on decel.

The VANOS seems like that should have other codes with it if it were a thing.
I’ll clear them tomorrow and see what it does.

Thanks 😊

The fuel trim codes are common and can be a lot of things. I don't think those are what tripped the CEL, usually they are present but don't trip the light on the dash. The VANOS probably tripped the light. That said, it's a good recommendation that if the car drove fine, to clear the codes and drive it some more.
