Dual Clutch in 4.6is??

As the supercharged 4.6is trans ages and options for replacement are considered... I'm curious, has anyone done this? Is it possible?

The current trans is relatively reliable and updating the software from Dinan a couple months ago helped, but it still presents some issues I'd love to erase. Until diving into those issues, curiosity grows on me... is a dual clutch system possible? Something from an x5m maybe?

I haven't spent much time looking into the current trans issues...
-Good bit of thudding/thunking around 60-65mph if the throttle isn't played with as well as generally poor shift quality in sport mode. Like a said, a refresh from Dinan on the software end did help a bit but before I spend time and money digging into fixing the zf I'm very curious if things can be upgraded.

I've only owned the x5 for ~4 months and what a machine it is... especially with the blower on it... but a higher quality trans would transform it into another animal. 147k and rather immaculate as far as maintenance or care is concerned from the pervious owner of 14 years.

Highly doubt anyone has done it. DCT seems to be extremely hard to retrofit to anything... how long has the world waited to rid the horrid SMG of the glorious S85... & still cant seem to be done. X5M never had a DCT either. First it had a strengthened 6HP like the facelift E53's. Now it has an 8HP, like every BMW of today. Id go for the 8HP anyway if it were up to me. Seems to be stronger, just as fast & significantly more comfortable to live with.

Realistically I think your best option is the manual swap. This has been done & is documented on the forum.

Appreciate the input. I've dabbled with the idea of the manual swap, but I think I want to keep the 4.6 an auto... just due to the "luxury" feel vs. sports car. If I didn't have the e46 I'd very much consider this though.

Maybe an 8hp is the way to go? I'll spend some time browsing this as a possibility.

A M4 DCT conversion into E46 is being done over on E46Fanatics right now. Someone has provided a stand-alone DCT controller but there is quite a bit of modification needed. Good thread if you want to read.

Didn't know this was happening... Might have to pick up a spare e46 and put it under the knife!

I read a great description of the DSG once (in a VW forum)…

"Take a manual transmission with one clutch and no electronics.
Add another set of clutches so you have twice as much to worry about, then you have those clutches being engaged/disengaged using solenoids and electronics. For good measure you locate the electronics in hot oil that is shared with the gearbox so metal shavings etc. can swirl around and have play dates with it. For even more fun you mount these electronics on high tech plastic (for obvious reasons) and again locate in a hot location. Then you market it as an automatic so people creep and crawl, riding the clutches in traffic, and you end up with ....
"

Had to chuckle...
