Cannot communicate with any modules except DME and TCM

Hello,
I posted recently about issues with trying to obtain a new key for 2001 X5 4.4i. After paying the dealer for a new key, it did not work, and would not let the car start (or crank) however all the electronics in the car turn on. Dealer told me it was because they cannot communicate with the EWS. Once I was home, I tried to communicate with the EWS using INPA and NCS Expert, but I was unsuccessful. Then, I realized that I cannot communicate with any modules in the car at all other than the DME and the TCM. Can anyone help me out as to what the problem can be? Dealer says water corroded wiring to the EWS module so it doesn’t work, but this doesn’t add up to me because the car still starts with the first key I had (and currently have). They say once they address the connection problem to the EWS, they can find out if the key is bad, or if it’s the car refusing the key. Can anyone help me out as to what the issue may be here? Any tips would be greatly appreciated because I’m completely stumped, and out $300 for a key that doesn’t work.

Thanks!

I just read that one wire goes to all the modules except the TCM and DME so you may be able to find it without too much difficulty.

Also: is your build date before 7/01?

I asked because my wife's 01 I call a 2000.5 because it still has the 20 pin connector under the hood and really complicates certain connection issues.

I'm pretty sure that was done with after 7/00. Make sure though the 20 pin connector is right above the left front wheel well.

This would explain a lot of things.

If the vehicle has round 20 pin diagnostic port only that is fully connected. Some transition time models have both diagnostic ports but on those OBD2 is only connected to power train modules.

Get an adapter that allows you to connect your laptop to the 20 pins connector under the hood.

In a pinch, you can just jump the wires in your 20 pin and your 16 pin under the dash will work on all modules.

Caveat, if you don't know what you are doing trying this little fix can ruin the DME. You will be in a worst pickle if you burn out your DME.

I put Jumpers in the cap of my wife's 20 pin. I took and posted photos but it might take a miracle to find.

Build date of 8/00 it shouldn't have the 20 pin connector but will have the equivalent wiring so as suspect by the dealer, corrosion or damaged wire is likely.

I would first locate EWS box and disconnect and clean the connection. Then if nothing obvious open up the E box and "exercise" the plugs to the DME (remove, clean, replace)

The thing is that I located the EWS module in the driver side footwell and it is not damaged at all... dealer tells me the car’s main computer is under the passenger seat and isn’t working, but this sounds off to me because if the ews had no power, the car wouldn’t start. I did check under the hood for the 20 pin port and didn’t see it, so I’m guessing there is some kind of connection problem with the 16 pin one
