need help deciding BMW X5 v Range Rover v Porsche Cayenne
ive narrowed it down to the BMW X5, Range Rover or the Porsche Cayenne obviously want to spend as little as possible price range is from around 05-08 plate so looking at the E53 BMW X5, the L322 Range Rover and the MK1 Porsche Cayenne reliability is important to me more then performance im looking at a petrol so has to be ULEZ Free any help would be appreciated, many thanks |

Having own my share of British cars I would stay away from the Land Rover. Oops didn't notice that you live across the pond. G'Day Mate, Oops wrong country.
Stick with the German cars.

I would also eliminate the range rover L322.. Overly complex electronics and expensive replacement parts make it less reliable and more expensive to maintain than an E53 X5 IMO. I just helped a friend fix and sell an L322 after 12 years of ownership (wife's car)..
If I were you, I would get a post- facelift E53 X5 diesel (3.0d), but some of that recommendation is the fact that US never got this car. I would love to have a 3.0d for the mileage. If you must have petrol get a post-facelift 3.0i, preferably with 6-speed manual. Can't comment on the Cayenne, but in the US, the Cayenne would be 2x the price of a comparable (same year/condition) E53 X5. I think reliability is probably close to same, but cost to repair/maintain would be higher. |

About three years back I was facing the question of replacing my (then 130k mile) E70 which had all the gizmos like Adaptive Ride, ventilated seats, etc. I drove many 35d from 2014/15 and then (a BMW service manager recommended) looked into the Cayenne. Drove a couple of Cayenne Diesels and liked them but the wife nixed the diesel idea. A friend of mine recommended trying the Macan S but I worried about it being too tight for four of us. So, decided to test a Cayenne S. Hands-down winner! Due to various unforeseen circumstances we have driven it far lass than expected and last year it was stationary for months on end. It never missed a beat, starts up faithfully no matter how long it has been sitting. This vehicle clearly has a lot of VAG DNA and that, in my book, makes for a more pleasant ownership experience. The infotainment is clearly not at BMW level but we want it for the driving experience.
Not saying there are no foibles, after about 6 months that transfer case was giving me the dreaded shudder on acceleration. Easy fix with the proper liquid at the correct fill level. Also, I had to get a Foxwell scanner to reset the oil service message....but still nothing like the circus I have had with my E53 (trans and engine were both out, now running great again) and the E70 (currently replacing a bucket full off parts in the vacuum control system). My wife can't wait to get both listed for sale..... I love the driving experience but Beamers fail overwhelmingly and the newer ones are poorly designed and tend to be hard to work on. Try watch Tyler Hoovie's video with his 1st gen Cayenne Turbo. I am sure it is not necessarily a standard but it is a data point. I wouldn't touch an RR with a barge pole but it is up to individual preference. GLW the search!

-It is definitely less complex and less prone to niggly issues than the RR L322 -There is much more support for X5 troubleshooting and replacement parts than L322. Automatic trans is fine, but i would suggest the manual or 5- or 6-speed is slightly less risky from a maintenance and failure perspective than an automatic for an older/higher mileage X5. To be sure, the X5 automatics are pretty sturdy with few reports of failures. |
