I turned the key to on and just let it sit for a few minutes so the computer could sort the car out and it seemed to work. The "Fail safe" code is gone, brake light still messed up. I guess I'll try another housing.

Any problem with the housing should be easy to see. I'd almost be willing to bet you have the wrong bulb (2 contacts instead of one or vice/versa) in there, did you switch bulbs with the other side?

Got it. I ran to the wrecking yard and grabbed another tail light housing. That did the trick. Something in mine must have shorted out.

Excellent! Glad you got that sorted out, those tail lights are fickle for sure... such a strange design by BMW - but I say that a lot about them
