Sounds like you're due for a new battery. How old is the current one? They're usually on their last legs after about four years, and cranking power and reliability goes out the window.

In the short term, start it up with some jumper cables and drive it around to let the alternator put some charge back into the battery. If you have a battery charger, hook it up. Then make arrangements to get a new battery a.s.a.p.

2004 with 44K on it, I though I had a lot of miles at 36K. Your battery shouldn't be dead yet, maybe an alternator issue?? Probably best bet to have a dealer diagnose it.

Try throwing a battery in in the mean time and see if that gets you moving.

If that's the case there's a very good chance you have a poor connection at the battery. Check to be sure the cables are tight on the battery terminals. If not, pull them off before you tighten them and remove any corrosion from the terminals and the inside of the cable connector with a bit of sandpaper, then tighten them up. You'd be amazed how often such a simple thing will knock out your electrical system.

did you try jumping it? does it crank if you do? I don't understand this problem from the info that you've provided, it sounds like a classic dead battery, why not just jump it?

You should be able to climb through the X, lower the back seats and open the well. I read a post on here by someone the other day saying they forgot to open the hatch when then removed the battery terminals to do some work, and they were able to re-attach this way.

there's a release inside the tail gate, I don't have an owners manual anymore because, well, I don't have an X5 anymore, but it's in there how to release the tailgate when the battery is dead. Fold down the rear seat and climb on in. You can also get a "charger" that plugs into your cigarrette lighter, jump the car or just get enough juice into it to pop the tailgate.
