im planning to replace my heater control valve, will i lose a lot of coolant removing the heater control ? i have about half a jug of coolant left

Not really. Especially, if you clamp the hoses.

When I change a thermostat I will unplug the temp sensor on the lower radiator hose and catch most of the coolant in a quart jar (easier than using the drain plug under the radiator and less risk off breaking off the 20 year old plastic drain plug). But as mentioned use some pinch pliers to pinch off the hoses you'll lose less than a pint
