Transmission Question
As I wait for my car to return from the hot rod shop painting it, I am considering the long term outlook for the leaky 4.4 L M62 unicorn in my 2002 E53. I have to consider the cost of pulling my motor for a refresh someday before it fails (hopefully) or even just wading into the timing chain guides and other likely candidates on a 150k mile M62, versus a buying a used long block to refresh at a more leisurely pace, for an eventual swap.
The latter route has its appeal since used X62 motors are slightly more expensive than push mowers currently. I could buy a structurally sound example now and slowly refresh it, and get another 50+ HP in the process. My question is, can I transplant a 4.8 N62 into my car without any major show-stoppers and drama? Obviously the E53 eventually had this motor from the factory so at first glance it seems like it would be quite doable. However, I am particularly concerned about three things: - oil pan(s), front diff, etc. if I source a motor from a 5 series. I would hope the X5 front wheel drive and oil sump/pans mechanicals from my current motor would bolt right up when the time came, and have found some internet info that suggests this. - transmission…is my very recently remanufactured OEM 4.4 tranny (ZF 5HP-24 ) the same unit used in later, higher output E53s (e.g. I won’t burn up my perfectly good tranny in short order), and will a 4.6L or 4.8L mill bolt on without any drama. - Electronics and programming. I am a unabashed ADD caveman when it comes to this stuff and doubt my patience to do anything super cosmic with a computer (actual coding, specifically) to make the swap work. What is entailed programmatically with with a swap involving the same family of motors, like the one I’m considering. Thanks in advance for any lessons learned and thoughts.
