Transmission Question
The latter route has its appeal since used X62 motors are slightly more expensive than push mowers currently. I could buy a structurally sound example now and slowly refresh it, and get another 50+ HP in the process. My question is, can I transplant a 4.8 N62 into my car without any major show-stoppers and drama? Obviously the E53 eventually had this motor from the factory so at first glance it seems like it would be quite doable. However, I am particularly concerned about three things: - oil pan(s), front diff, etc. if I source a motor from a 5 series. I would hope the X5 front wheel drive and oil sump/pans mechanicals from my current motor would bolt right up when the time came, and have found some internet info that suggests this. - transmission…is my very recently remanufactured OEM 4.4 tranny (ZF 5HP-24 ) the same unit used in later, higher output E53s (e.g. I won’t burn up my perfectly good tranny in short order), and will a 4.6L or 4.8L mill bolt on without any drama. - Electronics and programming. I am a unabashed ADD caveman when it comes to this stuff and doubt my patience to do anything super cosmic with a computer (actual coding, specifically) to make the swap work. What is entailed programmatically with with a swap involving the same family of motors, like the one I’m considering. Thanks in advance for any lessons learned and thoughts. The 4.6L will have a better chance than the N62 4.8L as the latter was never paired with the ZF5HP from the pre-LCI cars. Also the X drive is different between the two with the 4.8L using the ATC500 transfer case. The preLCI ones are mechanical and the postLCI are electric with an actuator.
Unfortunately the 4.6L variant of the M62 is more rare (and expesive) than the 4.8L. Programming would be a huge hurdle going to the N62 4.8L and would require swapping a lot of modules (harnesses too I assume). I'd stick with building an M62 4.4L up or swapping an M62 4.6L if I found a reasonable one were I in your shoes.

Thanks for the info Cristalworks. You aren’t kidding about 4.6 scarcity and price. A quick search finds one or two 4.6 long blocks, both in the 5k range, while there are many 4.4 M62 examples between 500 and 2000 bucks.
Most are out of 5 and 7 series cars, which begs the question of if the oil pans and diff will bolt on without drama. Nathan’s BMW YouTube channels has a video of him replacing a blown 4.4 from an X5 with one he says came from a 5 or 740. He mentions that the pans, etc. from the X5 will bolt right on.
