Single data point: I installed the cardone re-built front axles from Rock Auto in 2013. 8 years and 80k miles later - no problems. Currently, those things are less than $50 each. If I were to do it again, I would do the same thing. But to be fair...i have an aversion to massive amounts of grease

When assembling the outer joint the grease comes in a pouch you squeeze it in like toothpaste you never touch it it's super clean and part of my decision to replace joint vs. boot was to avoid the grease.
Crazy price on whole axle if I'm reading you right. Axles fail very very very slowly. I would not fault somebody's choice to use an inexpensive one if they DIY and get the idea they are likely sending another job to their future self. If you treat the boot with some rubber treatment maybe every couple years the boots will likely our live the car. I used to use Atp at-205 but it seems to have disappeared from the market.

+1 on the protectant. I've used this spray that's suppose to prevent UV and ozone from deuterating the rubber--regardless if the boot is neoprene or some off-brand.

Yeah...i spray it on my CV boots at least once an oil change. It comes out as a milky, greasy liquid. Suppose to help keep the boot pliable and flexible too.

I initially bought a spray bottle to use on my roof rails to keep them from turning 'old bmw gray' but then i found this stuff which is absolute MONEY. now this is borderline threadjacking so i'll just leave it at that! here's the link to RockAuto's CV axle offerings. i have bought some TERRIBLE half-shaft rebuilds before and had to send them back but these CarDone's have been great.

I'll look into the 303 as the at-205 which worked marvelously well seems to have disappeared from the market.

You sold me on doing the outer joints. I’m going to order them tonight. And as others have said, 303 is the best. I used it to revitalize the rubber and plastic on the car and we’ll as my hot tub, and other projects through the years.

I just did my right outside joint. I had two hiccups:
1) c clip locked into place took way too much force to remove but I left the axle nut loosened but on so I could pry against the hub 2) new c clip jammed. It took four attempts with 3 different c clips before I got it on. Don't force it. It should go on with 3-4 reasonable taps with BFH. If it fights pull it off and check the c clip. They might go on better with the open side up or down for a gravity assist. I missed the memo of that's the case. Tips; I used a u-bolt clamp on the axle for something to lever against and to hammer the new joint back on used a large vice grip so I could hold the axle against the subframe so I wasn't pushing against the inner joint.
