DME swap before cloning

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know for certain if I swap the DME in my E53 (without cloning or EWS synch), will I be able to set the key to pos 2 and use INPA to activate the Aux fan? I do NOT want to immobilize the vehicle.

Please let me know if this is possible and if there are any pitfalls to avoid (besides trying to crank the car).

I'm pretty certain my DME needs to be repaired but would be awesome to be able to verify the new Aux Fan works as well before I send the DME out for repair.

The PWM signal from my stock DME appears to have an issue activating the fan and as a result it doesn't see the electrical return...and sets a Fan Activation error code in the DME. My voltage at the hot from fuse 61 is good, the ground is good, the voltage on the control wire does indeed step down but the wave form of the PWM signal doesn't look like a correct square wave.

That's why I'm sending out the DME for repair and also to be cloned to the new DME I bought so I have a backup unit as well...or a replacement if the original cannot be correctly repaired.

Much thanks in advance.

EWS and DME are paired. Usually used DME comes with a key and ews. If you have the tool to sync ews I don't think you are at risk of causing a problem to run the aux fan test though. I would do it myself knowing I might get ews sync issue I can fix

I don't know what will happen if you swap in a used (uncoded, un-synched) DME and turn to position 2..

Is your new fan installed?

If not, do you have anyone local with a BMW to test your fan for you?
Most of the E46, E39, X3 of the same vintage use the same connector and a similar fan

You can use INPA, but it should also turn on if the temp sensor is disconnected.

I recently got the wiring (male/female connectors) from the junkyard and an old aux fan to make a 6 foot pigtail that would allow me to park another BMW close to mine, nose to nose, plug in a suspected bad fan- still installed - to a BMW with a working Aux fan and test it.

I’m aware they’re paired. That’s why I want to be careful not to piss off ny EWS.

Yes, the née fan is in. I pulled the sensor and nothing. Tried 2 more new fans…nothing. Grabbed my oscilloscope and found the signal error.

If you have a signal generator you can send a square wave to run the fan. It shouldn't be too hard to find out the duty cycle / hz and voltage it uses.
