Door Locks

Since it's nice and warm out and there was a pretty sweet X5 in my local LKQ, I grabbed two door locks, one passenger side door handle and two flawless moisture barriers from a 2004. I have a 2001.

Was there a reengineering of the flaws in the earlier models?

The part number shows the same on Realoem so I suspect it's thye same as the earlier versions. It's a shame to see such a clean vehicle in the yard.
I would have taken the driver's side door handle but the window was down and I couldn't figure out how to raise it manually.
It's much easier to extract the moisture barriers when the elephant snot that holds them in is warm and soft. I got most of it to come off with the barriers.

You'd have to apply power to the motor to raise the window. 12v jumper pack will work. 50/50 guess on the polarity

the window is attached at the regulator with a couple bolts so if you detach that portion it slides right up.

Push comes to shove just break the plastic clips

I just installed a new handle. What I’m interested in is whether the 2004 version has any improvements over the 2001 when it comes to the door latch and locking motors. If none, I will have a spare set to upgrade and swap out without taking the car off the road.

You might have found that the price of the complete door (taken off at the hinges) was less than the sum of the parts, and you'd have had time to carefully dismantle once back at home. I've never done that myself, but have looked into it a little.

No change I'm aware of save at some point they added a rubber nipple to the top of the door release cable to keep water out (didn't help anything they freeze somewhere else)
