E53 4.4i N62 Muffler Retrofit

Just figured I'd put this up for the 3.0i guys. I installed & can conclude later e53 N62 4.4L mufflers are a direct fit for e53 3.0i. My X5 is a 2003 3.0i manual trans pre-facelift model, I knew pre-facelift M62 4.4/4.6i mufflers are direct fit but wasn't sure on later N62 4.4i, took the chance on them.

Very quiet though not much of a difference from stock & this is with headers(no cats) installed. Quad tips look nice though.

Might cut open the mufflers & remove baffling inside then weld them closed at a later date.

Looks great. Don't forget the cutout trim for quad tips to finish off the lower rear valance.

I also did this mod on my facelift 3.0d. I removed DPF and installed middle muffler on it's place. Moved exhaust pressure and temp sensors from DPF and installed them on the muffler pipe.

Thanks didn't know there was another piece to go with it. Might not bother though, this is a hard driven high mileage beater haha.

Doesn't sound like much at idle, very stock. Only real difference from original mufflers is a slightly more aggressive sound when you step on it, pretty low volume though.

Nice, wish we had the turbo diesel 6 here in Canada. Also interesting didn't know they had DPF system already back then.

It existed but only in some Euro markets - pretty rare in the rest of the world.

Looks like there were factory fitted options, which included DPF monitoring etc. (DDE 6.0 I suppose...along with swirl-flaps?) and an OE retro-fit kit, which didn't include any sensors, monitoring etc (used regular DDE 5.0).

Clavurion is the expert on these matters - he's the only XO member I know of that has one of these cars.

I have had 4.6iS mufflers on my 2003 M54 for three years now and you honestly can't tell at all that the trim is missing. Though the tips on my mufflers might obscure the view since they are a lot bigger.

Great mod, thanks for posting. Are the pipes any bigger on yours thank the stock ones? Mine are 10mm bigger than stock, but the mufflers are exactly the same as far as Ican tell, just bigger tips.

I put 4.6 mufflers on my and they look great, but they’re too quiet. I’ve got the same style, one piece oval tips, but as everyone knows, it will require me to fabricate/ modify it so it can bolt up. Not sure if I want to chop up the exhaust just to make it work. Im polishing them currently, so I’ve got more time to decide whether or not to do so.
