Another transfer case issue?
Clicking noise from central area of car when moving in parking lots and other low speed conditions when foot off the a gas pedal. Getting worse everyday it seems. Seems worse if on a slight downward incline. Sometimes a slight shudder in entire car on slope. No symptom when going uphill. I'm suspecting transfer case chain. I had replace rear prop shaft assembly about 10,000 miles back. New flex disc on front shaft. I dont think it's that spline issue. I did the quick fix on actuator rotating the white gear 180. Still have the problem. New CV axles in front and one on back. I get the feeling something is going to freeze up. Seems if it was chain it would be on acceleration and going uphill. Any thoughts? Should be x-drive. Pull the fuse for TC to verify front axle/TC related.

Hold up.
So I had my girlfriend put the car in reverse and drive while I peered underneath. I realized the sound was coming from further back. So I jacked it up and found it's that damn rear CV joint on prop shaft again. I have replaced it twice. I feel like I must be installing it incorrectly. Going to take it off and see what the bearings look like. I really struggled with the install. I just dread doing it again. So not TC chain. Does anyone else find connecting the drive shaft at rear differential difficult?

Never done one but I note that BMW warn against letting the CV joint to drive shaft angle get too large during install - apparently it's very easy to damage the CV joint seals by having too great an angle...
![]() ![]() Important! Do not let propeller shaft fall into joints. Joints and rubber sleeve on constant-velocity joint can be damaged.

That's great info. That occurred a few times I'm sure as I installed it. Thanks for your response.

Where did you get your driveshaft?

I got this one from car parts .com 7 months ago. The return policy is only 3 months or 15000. I took it off and apart today. There was some grease but not much. It's shot. I'm going to get the next one from Rock Auto I think. They have one for 325 fish and another for 400 and change. This time I will grease it up good. I don't know why I assumed it was pre packed. It would be nice if it had a sticker or something that said. Hey dummy grease me. I hate buying another part for this high mileage x5.

Ugh. I would recommend a junkyard driveshaft over one of those crap off brand pieces. I think that’s the real root cause of your problem.
