From past experience of the failures of workarounds I never try them anymore, just too many things that can go wrong. IMO the best practice is to use OE or OEM parts and don't try to reinvent the wheel for convenience.

Yes, when the OE options are good, I use them. (And I rarely use OEM - people don't understand how loose the definition of OEM is. If you sell a light bulb to BMW, anything that you make qualifies as OEM.) But the OE option is this case is known bad.

Here are the definitions that I use: Genuine: Anything that BMW sells over the parts counter. This may include things like "Genuine BMW Victor Reinz," which is insulting. That said, I use enough genuine parts that my parts guys recognize my voice on the phone. OE: The actual supplier of the Genuine part. (I will include a previous supplier of the Genuine part in this category.) OEM: A manufacturer that sells anything at all to BMW, no matter how unrelated to the replacement part being sold aftermarket. I usually buy either Genuine or OE, unless I have a specific reason not to. Unfortunately, BMW Genuine parts quality has radically declined, so I have more frequent reasons to go aftermarket. Edit: I will note that there's some grey area here, in my opinion. For example, I don't care whether or not BMW sells Victor Reinz as Genuine or not. It's aftermarket trash to me. Whenever I get a VR part over the counter at BMW, I refuse it.

- Check "matthews volvo forum". The Volvo oil pan (1994-2000 S70, V70 and 2001-2007 S60, V70 etc.) came from factory with Anaerobic gasket.

Yes, it was installing a pan in the Volvo 850 I run in Lemons that put this thought in my head.

My M54 OPG lasted over 150,000 miles when I replaced it. Not sure what you have going on but most everyone here gets over 100,000 miles before they start to sweat or leak.
