I've done this job 3-4 times and I have only managed to not break the thermostat once.

Also for anyone wondering I drove without the transmission thermostat in the dead of Canadian winter for a couple months and didn't notice any difference in performance.

Id be willing to bet you just didn't notice but your 1-2 gear shifts were crap.

I don't get proper gear shifts into second for the first 5-8 minutes when ambient is 10° C or less even with a functioning t-stat.

I would have loved to see what were your transmission temps during that time.

+2 on that. Wish I'd known when I replaced my tank. Ended up having to take things apart twice as I had to have the truck drivable while I waited for replacement thermostat.

I didn't know about the little t-stat until I removed the tank and the spring shot out. I bought a t-stat only to realize a few days later the tank came with t-stat.

Interesting. I'll have to see what tank I bought as it didn't come with the thermostat.

As original or equivalent part the part number of the expansion tank is the same on both manual and automatic versions. So it doesn't include the thermostat.

My Dorman expansion tank for Advance Auto came with the AT thermostat and level sensor but the level sensor worked but was an absolute joke.
