Premature pump failure is almost always complete failure not weak so odds on favorite is FPR is the only fault. Fingers crossed for ya it's always nice when you attack and solve right away

Check valve failure won't prevent the pump from working. It just forces the pump to pressurize the system every time. If the check valve is actually the source of failure, you can even buy external check valves. (Granted, I'd probably buy the external check valve to test with rather than as a permanent solution.)

Just reporting back here, the fuel filter (with the built-in pressure regulator) is now changed and all the issues seem to be gone, at least for so far. No more check engine light, power loss or starting issues. I had completely forgotten how nicely the 4.6 moves X. As mentioned, the pump has probably a lot of life left in it so fortunately I didn't buy it before testing with the new filter first.

There is definitely more than one version of the fuel filter for pre-facelift e53. Mine has 6/03 build date and the filters I get (with submission of the vin number) do not have the option to remove anything from it.
