Stalling after idling for 20 minutes?

Hello. 2004 e53 3.0i. 223k miles. The x runs great. Idles fine. If I idle in a parking lot for 20 plus minute, put it in drive, drive to the stop sign, it will idle and run fine and then stall at the stop sign. When I turn it on again, put it in drive and drive down the road, it will be fine after that. The stalling only happens after it idles for about 20 minutes or more. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Stalling after idling for 20 minutes?

Usual culprit for those symptoms is camshaft sensor usually the intake

How would I diagnose the camshaft sensor? and the intake I’m guessing is just looking for leaks and breaks? Thanks

You'll want a code reader would be the primary diagnostic.

These fail internally and so you won't see an external signs of a problem.

This problem you're having is pretty well documented. Hard/no starts, random power loss, random shutdowns are all signs of CPS problems.

Pretty easy DIY as well if you're moderately handy. IMO, at your mileage I would replace both intake and exhaust CPS since it's mostly the same work to get them both done.

Remember to get OE - don't cheap out on these.

I think Andrew was meaning the intake cam position sensor...

Explicitly saying intake as opposed to exhaust CPS.

The symptoms that happened in both of our e53 at about 120-130,000 miles;

When I would accelerate a little bit and coast, engine would stall. It happened a couple times a month but at the end happened a couple times a week. No cps related code.

The perfect example; sitting at a red light waiting to turn left.

Light turns green but there's oncoming traffic so I pull forward gently and gently hit the brakes to wait for traffic. Engine stalls.

Other good example; pacing though a parking lot to find a spot so barely above idle. Throttle off to coast into spot and engine stalls.

If those sound familiar; 90% chance intake CPS.

The diagnostic for worn out CPS is symptom based. I've never gotten a cps related code on our e53s.

Gentle gas followed by coast then stall is the primary symptom.

OEM only on CPS.

Andrew as always you nailed it on the head with the symptom’s. Those scenarios Explain my experiences perfectly. I will start my research on how to change them out. If you have a good diy link or diy YouTube video please send it my way. Thanks again and this is why I love this forum.

Stalling after idling for 20 minutes?

I used YouTube. It was literally my first repair on my X5. I bought my car with SES light on but it was just random cylinder error. XO hinted at the intake cam sensor. That was my introduction to XO. A mere 8700 posts ago.

I bought an OEM part via Amazon (not prime). Instructions were in German .

I spent 90 minutes fishing the cord under the intake. When I did the same repair on wife's e53, I just routed the wire over the top! 89 minutes faster!

I believe the vanos solenoid is in the way and needs to come out to unbolt, also get a new o-ring the part likely comes without it.

I never got an error related to CPS. On wife's car I think I got an error related to exhaust CPS at about 180,000 mi. Mine is at about 204,000 Original exhaust CPS.
