When xDrive doesn't work!
Why our X5s needs a working xDrive! The snow is not even deep!

Can the xDrive models fail in such a way that the front wheels will not be turned? Even if he has only RWD, winter tires would be able to get him out of this situation unless it is pure ice under the snow, or if there is a steeper incline than we can see in the video. Or if his winter tires are bald.
I drive my FWD daily in snow like this, in fact it looks a lot like this outside right now.

Pre-LCI vs LCI Tcase
The Pre-LCI has the NV125 transfer case. Notice it has no actuator motor on the side.
![]() Here is the LCI transfer case that is the ATC500. This one has the actuator, thus, it has the clutches in the planetary set to differential the front vs rear.

That car has non functional x-drive.
No power to the front wheels combined with non snow tires. Rear snow tires would have worked without 4wd. Sad he kept trying. Get a tug or some sand if your 4wd not working. My previous car (Ford explorer) had 4wd but only supplied power though "limited slip" which wears out and only put power to the spinning wheels.

Some of the comments were hilarious. Obviously non func 4wd but everyone condemning the X5 as terrible in the snow.
That's okay, most people shouldn't own BMWs anyway, better they think the marque is terrible. Keeps them from making bad financial decisions, from some BMWs ending up in the junkyard, and keeps the prices a little lower for the rest of us.

The comments say he has snow tires, but I agree Andrew, he is either on all-seasons, or he his snow tires have been completely worn down. A RWD X5 with snow tires should have no trouble getting out of that situation.

When xDrive doesn't work!
The comment also says "driver is a man". Not from my neck of the woods. We know when to try something else. Also, just like the non functional x-drive, clearly non functional tires.

Comment said "winter tyres." Don't know how aggressive the tire was, how worn, or what the poster even considers winter tires.
But, I had a closer look at it. Does something about the tire diameter of the front to rear look weird? Like the rear have a much larger profile than they should in relation to the front? They almost look like 20" E70 wheels in the front and 19" E70 wheels in the rear. Hard to tell given the video quality.
