I don't think it's the sensor because I found one from a donor vehicle and the same thing happened. It's a hall effect sensor which is pretty darn reliable.

My game plan is to see if I can access the wiring from the crank sensor plug and trace where it goes into the DME. I found a donor E60 with the same 4.4 engine and the sensor wires go into some sort of ground on the block and one wire goes into the main DME harness. Maybe there's something going on there. I was looking into buying a Bentley but reviews say it has very little info on the 4.4 N62 engine so I didn't bother. I'm going to borrow a high end scan tool and pay for help on answers.com from a BMW tech to troubleshoot this properly.

Are you having the same issue? Crank no start / no spark?
Yes I removed the intake manifold and put a new CCV, then I have crank & no start. I didn't tackle it methodically so the car sitting in the garage for the last 3 weeks. But it's the weird voltages that can from all my sensors, cams and crank. I kinda got tired of it all, but I'm going to start all over again tomorrow and do a total scan with a foxwell see what happens. But I'm going to start with MAF removed first as someone suggested.

I fixed my issue. The IVM (intergrated power module) was bad. It sits in a black box in the same compartment under the cowl as the DME. I pulled the connectors off and it has some fuses on it. One fuse was blown. The connector pins had green crusties on it. I swapped it out with a junkyard one. Fired right up. Had "Engine Program Fail Safe" (limp mode). The module next to it is the VVT VDO module. I pulled that and same thing, green crusties on the pins. Replaced that with a junkyard one and the engine failsafe was gone. Basically inspecting DME, VVT, and the IVM is a great starting point.
