Took X in for diagnostic, then limp mode

Most, if not close to all, daily drive our trucks. Same here.
Took my X on the shop to have them diagnose fifth gear shudder about 35-40 miles an hour. Nothing before those speeds, nothing after, and nothing at high speeds. No shudder in any other gear. Just fifth.

I’ve mashed the gas, drove it like I stole it, sat in traffic, sit in it to stay warm, drive for hours (getting 21-22 miles the gallon), fresh fluid, filter, valve body rubber tubs and the square rubber gasket (trans brake gasket?), No codes, no issues. Just fifth gear shudder. 137k on the dash.

I give specific instructions, allow/bring vehicle up to operating temperature, drive. The shudder will present at 35 miles an hour.

They didn’t call me, I had to call them an ask, what did the diagnostic say.

Told me it went into trans fail mode.


Because I don’t no everything there is to know about the X.

What is the likelihood the tech drove it hard, causing the transmission to slam into gear?

They did tell me it was a half quart low in fluid, but I never had any problems and even had the gears slam/ shift hard and no limp mode not trans fail mode.

Did the stars just align?

X5chemist will become famous soon enough
Low fluid level will affect torque converter lock up. I think the X5 can lock the converter in lower gears too. It's a GM transmission. The scanner should report codes. PLus they can connect gauges to test pressure. Does the shop specialize in transmissions?

Can’t say for sure, but they service mini, bmw, Porsche Mercedes’, so I have to assume they they what they’re doing🤷*♂️
