2005 X5 Won’t Move on Hard Turn

I have a serious problem on my old E53 that hope someone can help me with. The vehicle almost locks up when making low speed hard turn left or right. When I’m in a parking lot or pulling in my driveway it almost stops when the wheel is turned all the way. Weirdest damn thing. Does anyone have an ideas of what this could be?

I’m sure the smarter folks will weigh in, but it sure sounds like a front diff problem. Some good threads on the board regarding front diff issues and R/R.

Front diff spider gear pinion likely broken and when torque is applied the gear loosens up and mashes on the side of the case and binds the axle shafts.
R+I differential case to determine if damaged.

A couple of us have recently had front diffs out. It’s a serious PITA, but not super technical. More brute force. Axles were the worst part for me.

I should have added; remove axle drain plug and inspect fluid for excess amount of steel particles.

2005 would be xDrive. Do you have any errors on the dash? This is one of the symptoms of failed transfer case actuator. If you give it enough gas at full lock, does the car still move?

Sounds like the general opinion is the transfer case. I'm going to research the R/R this weekend and attack it next weekend, wish me luck! I'll post an update when I figure out what the issue is. Thanks for all the help.

Not transfer case, front differential, very different parts..

Actuator is easy enough to check without any tools. After you park the X5 do you get a series of clicks from under the middle of the X? If so... your actuator gear has failed. Easy and cheap service item.

If it proves to be the diff, as others have stated, much more difficult problem and not fun. I think, "easiest" method of attack would be an engine support bar and dropping the sub frame. You can undo the steering rack from the sub frame and hang it. Be sure to replace your engine mounts while you are at it if they haven't been done.
