Instrument panel display weirdness
OK, in the realm of things that can go wrong on 20 year old BMWs, this is pretty small potatoes, but is nonetheless very odd ... wondering if anybody else has experienced this.
Car is a 2002 X5 3.0. All of a sudden in the area of pixels that display the time (the strip of pixels below the odometer, trip meter, and temperature), one side has gotten BRIGHTER than the other. Everything else looks normal, and it's not a matter of one side getting darker or a burned out bulb ... the right side is considerably brighter. The display is fine in all other areas. Have any of y'all ever had this happen? I can upload a photo if it would help anyone. Thanks in advance! Chris Lockhart, Texas |

It's not surprising when led strips fail in this manner. The circuit that controls the current just needs one component to fail to cause it. Unfortunately that usually means component level repair. Eg desolder and resolder SMD components.
There are services that all they do is repair instrument panels. Seek and you shall find. Usually they fix by replacing the whole LCD panel.

Good to know ... I guess. :-) I've read lots of cases of dead pixels, etc., but hadn't seen anyone mention getting brighter before. Off for repair, I guess.
If y'all have any recommendations or positive experiences with vendors doing this repair, I'm all ears. Seem to be a lot of them out there. Thanks and regards, Chris |

I ended up trading my e53 in before I needed the service so no first hand deals but I suspect somebody who has will chime in.

"Fixels" comes to mind and is supposed to be the go to for display issues. But there are others. Bavtekinc also comes to mind.

The backlighting is done with 5 regular bulbs. I would first renew them or test to change places.

Thanks to all for the good advice. I'm going to check out the bulbs as suggested and see how things look. Nice to know that there's one vendor (Bavtek) that's fairly local to me if I need to take it in for repair. I'm usually up in that neck of the woods (Georgetown, TX) once a week or so.
