I haven't had any luck in the past decade or so with banging on a starter but maybe once or twice with a pump.

Take a recording of before and after. A proper pump does have some vigor to it.

When I had my first car... a long time ago. ('82 528e) and couldn't afford parts I nursed a starter for a VERY long time. When it finally got replaced it looked like it had been hurled off a mountain from all the "gentle" bumps.

That's awesome. I was able to do the trick years ago. Stopped working for me about 15-20 years ago

Well that was quick, thanks Rock Auto!
I'll try and get it installed tonight.

was helping a buddy with a crank, no start on his 3.0 E53 X5..I quickly determined he wasn't getting fuel. I then learned it started after he tried to change a fuse for the cigarette lighter which had shorted out.

Turns out he pulled the fuse for the fuel pump . Both the Fuel pump and the cigarette lighter have 25 amp fuses and are located approx same place on 1st and 2nd row of fuse box.

Of course it would be made in China.

For this failure, i was literally cruising 45-50mph headed home and just lost power. No prior work done.

When you get the new pump installed, I can't tell you exactly how to teat the siphon jet from the dashboard. Learn how to unlock the OBC on board computer to get to test six. It's possible to test without running out of gas just by watching the two tank levels in liters

This PDF shows all the tests, including for left and right fuel tank levels.

So the new pump is in and everything seems to be working like it should. I won't have a chance to drive the X5 much until next week. The old pump was definitely louder and less consistent in sound than the new one. No notable difference in resistance between the new and old across the motor, both about 3.2-3.4 ohms measuring with the harbor freight DMM. That is a super easy install.

I will play around in the hidden menus next week too.

Nothing exciting in this video but here it is anyway.
