E53 x5 whine from pulley or oil pump

2006 e53 x5 4.8is with terrible whine from either pulley or oil pump. doesn't matter the temp but it does get louder while driving and also at idle (seen in video) any input if greatly appreciated

Sounds like power steering pump? Try to use a piece of hose held to your ear to scout around for the source.

Sounds like the bearing is shot in an idler pulley.

Oil pump is internally in the engine. highly doubt that is the noise. depending on the mileage and age you may want to refresh the pulleys first. If it still persists then its in the powersteering, alternator, or ac pulley bearing. its a process of elimination.

One other thing you can do, which I had to do to nail down exactly what pulley(s) was bad, is use an automotive stethoscope. You can get a very accurate location for that sound using one. They don't cost much either.

wifes e46 was crazy too, it ended up being remains of the old serpentine belt that had erroded and combined itself with oil the engine was leaking and had fouled the pulleys but needed a keen eye to see.....wire brush against pulleys whilst staring engine momentarily cleaned this and all was well
