Sounds like power steering pump? Try to use a piece of hose held to your ear to scout around for the source.

wifes e46 was crazy too, it ended up being remains of the old serpentine belt that had erroded and combined itself with oil the engine was leaking and had fouled the pulleys but needed a keen eye to see.....wire brush against pulleys whilst staring engine momentarily cleaned this and all was well
