Panoramic Sunroof bilnd - what is this peice

I may have mentioned before that my car did not have the blindes for the panoramic sunroof. This is the biggest PITA ever and I eventually got some insulating roof block from AliExpress that was made for this car and attaches with suction cups. at least the inside temp was reduced in summer and winter which we are in now is way more bearable. Tint waspontless as the glass just let in or out the car internal temperature.


So I have been working out away to make my own roof and have found everything is possible. I only use it in vent mode and do not slide the glass open as I do not think our climate is suited to it. Opening and closing the blind is useful especially when using the vent mode and my design will inculde lining the new design with roof fabric to match the current one.


What is holding me up is I have found this perforated peice of TIN for want ofa better word. It seems to be attached to something at the rear which I can only guess is the drive cable for the off side, yet the side that is stuck at the front gives a different perspective on how that is fitted. My best measurements indicate it is the width of the difference between the left and right slides and it is abut 2" deep.
The images show the free end which attaches to the LHS, bearing in mind my car is RHD build. the other two are towards the rear of the car.


What will I have to do to sort this out, I am concerned that it will at some stage come back to bite me if I do nothing. Should I drop the rear of the roof lining to see what it is and how to deal with it, if so how and what do I release to do this. Euro plastic is made from shit that just continues to brake the more you touch it.

Hasn't anybody seen this peice of flat metal in the roof of their car? Mainly those who have a Pano roof and have had to remove the interior liner or the pano roof iteslf? That perforated peice in the photo...!


I am sure it is not supposed to be at the back like it is, but should be set across the roof from left to right.



If there is a way to remove or even lower the roof liner at the rear so I can get better pictures, I would really appreciate the info on what to do.

I just want to make up a blank liner and cover it, never to see the bloody pano again as far as I am concerned.

Certainly out of place. It's supposed to crossover the sunroof from side to side. Here's a shot of it on an E61. Same sunroof cartridge.

Again my apologies for being so late with responses. Sometimes I just go a week or two without turning on the computer.


Thank you so much for the image, it does seem to make more sense than what mine is doing way back in the tailgate section and pointing forward.

It looks like I am going to have to drop the roof lining to see what I can do at the very least. It might entail someone operating the glas back and forth while I try to hold it in place at a guess. It may be on a spiral drive,maybe not. All guesses and speculation.


Do you have any idea what purpose this serves in the grand scheme of the whole roof system?

When the roof is opened to vent position the blinds separate an inch and that grill sits at that location working as a coarse filter.

Now that does make sense, as I do not have any blinds I thought they were a single peice. Now I know they are double, I can see how it would act as vent/filter.
I don't suppose you know how it could possibly end up all the way at the back on one side?

Do you have any idea, how the actual mechanism drives forward and back. It must move with the covers, but as mine have gone , it seems this thing has just continued to run to the rear on one side.


My thoughts are to make a single peice unit that is manually operated as in our climate it is a complete waste of time except for the vent function. I can cover it in the same colour roof lining material, but first I want to get rid of this peice of metal from causing any damage.


Whether that means to return it to its correct place or remove it completely , I just don't know. What ever I do, I want to do before the Aussie Summer makes its vengeful return.
