Can't blame engineering for recycled plastic use. A design can be great. Materials used in the design are governed. Blame politicians and extreme environmentalist.

I have heard BMW uses a lot of recycled materials. Jap cars are all virgin.
That’s why my 2003 Lexus looks new and my 2003 BMW LOOKS 20 years old.

That's absolutely not true.
Also, it's worth noting that one of the reasons why, say, Toyota interiors wear better is that they sacrifice feel for durability. The more plasticized the leather, the more durable. Toyota leather is almost indistinguishable from vinyl, so of course it lasts a long time. Dakota leather is halfway in between. Nappa leather is basically the least treated you can get and still have reasonable durability. Likewise, leather and cloth covers can't peel away if you use bare plastic. I'm not going to defend BMW's quality problems. BMW's quality was bad, remains bad, and likely will always remain bad. But it's worth separating the quality problems from the tradeoffs.

I have owned several E24… 635CSI and M6.
Those were built to impress and last. 2 quality that BMW dropped 4 decades ago.

I've spent a lot of time with '80s BMWs. They have plenty of their own build quality issues. They're very easy to work on, though.
