Whirling sound when stopping

I'm getting this whirling sound when stopping. Press the brakes, and just as the car comes to a stop a loud whirling sound comes up and lasts about a second after a complete stop. So it is obvious it is not bearing, linkages, etc as the car is at a complete stop.
It is not predictable, sometimes it happens, not consistent, doesn't matter road surface, turning, incline.

Has anyone experienced this, or offer any pointers?

Thanks

None. No warning lights, no system codes, and car drives normal, no clunking noises on potholes, no grinding noises, no steering wheel vibrations, no engine hesitation at any point. Just this noise sounds like a spinning fan or pump running on empty. And as I said, car comes to complete stop with no further momentum forward or back, and the sound continues for a second after the complete stop.

Well, that is pretty strange. The only thing that comes to mind would be maybe something loose and spinning on a drive shaft.
