I eventually found out, the hard way, that fuel rail has to be bled. I just asked someone to start the engine while I pushed the pin on the Schrader valve to let the air out, and lo and behold, the engine started so beautifully. I've been going round and round searching like crazy. Nowhere did I see anyone mention this as a cause of crank no start. May this be of some value to someone in the future. I removed the intake manifold twice to no avail. At any case, I learnt a lot, and after a lot of frustration, I'm happy with the result.
