X5 4.6 ZF trans shifter lever, no reverse lockout?

Does the 4.6is with the ZF trans not have a reverse lockout from neutral when shifting from D?

On my 3.0 with the GM trans, you can tug the shifter from D to N, but moving from N to R you need to depress the shift lever button.

Driving the 4.6 today and was surprised it moves from N to R without pressing the shift lever button. I cant remember if its always been like that!

Tried a search of reverse lockout but nothing came up.

Sounds like you have a bad interlock cable.

I just checked realoem, the cable is part of the entire shift lever assembly.

What goes wrong with this part, in your experience? Is it a replace the assembly kind of thing or is it repairable?

On Fords, it's usually a bushing failure. Pull the console cover off and take a peak.

Bushing? The lever seems to move fine with no slop or play. Unless it bushes some other portion of the mechanism.

I honestly have no idea yet how the interlock system works, decades of many automatic cars and this is the first one I have to futz with one lol!

Will take a look and see if there is anything obviously amiss with it.

On the one I had go bad it showed corrosion like stains from cold drinks in a hot cup holder causing sweating. Of course the air temperature can hit 140f and the interior probably hits 300 Kelvin. I ended up replacing the whole mechatronic gearshift.

I don't know if a thorough cleaning will work for you (didn't for me) but let's just say that being super careful with the shift cover is warranted, as the tabs can get bent or broken easily and it will pop off going into sports or manual mode..

Been looking around online and I see there is a solenoid on the side that prevents the shifter from going back...or keeps it from shifting out of park if it goes bad. I think it also throws an EGS code.

But all I've seen about it is problems shifting out of park. The shift lock works perfectly going into and out of P, only problem is the lack of N to R lockout.

Will check with INPA first before opening up the shifter bezel, thanks for the PSA on the clips!
