X5 4.6 ZF trans shifter lever, no reverse lockout?
On my 3.0 with the GM trans, you can tug the shifter from D to N, but moving from N to R you need to depress the shift lever button. Driving the 4.6 today and was surprised it moves from N to R without pressing the shift lever button. I cant remember if its always been like that! Tried a search of reverse lockout but nothing came up.

Sounds like you have a bad interlock cable.

On Fords, it's usually a bushing failure. Pull the console cover off and take a peak.

Bushing? The lever seems to move fine with no slop or play. Unless it bushes some other portion of the mechanism.
I honestly have no idea yet how the interlock system works, decades of many automatic cars and this is the first one I have to futz with one lol! Will take a look and see if there is anything obviously amiss with it.

Been looking around online and I see there is a solenoid on the side that prevents the shifter from going back...or keeps it from shifting out of park if it goes bad. I think it also throws an EGS code. But all I've seen about it is problems shifting out of park. The shift lock works perfectly going into and out of P, only problem is the lack of N to R lockout. Will check with INPA first before opening up the shifter bezel, thanks for the PSA on the clips!

EODguy, btw, what symptoms were you having when your interlock cable/gear shift assy went bad?
