Fog light Gremlins/ airbag light

E53 2001 4.4i

Soooo..

Had the car a year.. not sure to much of the history, but it wasn’t in the best condition. I have replaced a lot of small parts and fixed a stripped prop shaft/. Transfer case. Seems to be ok now but still having a couple of annoying issues preparing my car for ITV (MOT Spain)

1. Fog lights will only stay on if I hold the button down…
I have tried replacing the dash unit/control to one from scrap yard.. no bueno!
I can’t imagine they are both broken so assume it must be an issue with the LCM?

2. Airbag light keeps coming back on.
At first I couldn’t clear the faults… so I ended up stripping the interior out and getting to airbag control… (fun times) with it removed I was finally able to reset it and clear the faults. After 3 days clear.. the airbag light has come back on, now it is indicating that it is the airbag ring. I have tried to track this part number down to see how difficult it is to replace myself (if possible), but I just can’t find it even on REAL OEM page… I wonder if anyone could help me here?

Is the LCM changed and not coded properly? (A unit from E39 would work like this because E39 has different kind of fog light switch.)

So is the airbag fault code for driver airbag (too high resistance)?

It’s very difficult for me to pin it down as my Spanish is not so good… I asked him to write it down and it was “airbag ring”and he pointed to the steering column (if that’s any help… I assume he’s taking about the airbag slip ring.

I guess I should remove the LCM and check the serial..

If you have NCS you can check the coding.
These are the parameters for fog light switch functionality. "aktiv" for triggering push button like on E53 or "nicht_aktiv" for normal switch.
TASTER_NSW (front) and TASTER_NSL (rear)

Slipring Nr.3

What codes did you get that you could and couldn't clear?

Airbag light usually comes down to a broken clip in the door panel airbag or someone got unlucky on unplugging and plugging an airbag in without disconnecting the battery making the system think that there has been an accident with a bag deployment.

I'm fluent in Spanish if you need translations, either written or verbal.

Thanks for all your fast replies! Very helpful!

Initially it would not connect to clear any faults..
Then I removed airbag control unit from under centre console and had it reset and cleared.
He showed me before and after… before it showed faults on nearly every belt and tensioner!
After clearing it didn’t have any faults.
After reinstalling it was good for a few days now it has come back with one fault that I suspect is correct (airbag slip ring)
He mentioned it might be a cable inside the slip ring.

Apologies for my lack of knowledge… as you can probably tell I’m no expert with cars or anything involving codes etc.. but I would like to try and solve this issue as cheaply as possible.. the car is old and I suspect it hasn’t got much life left.
