Steering Angle Sensor Issues

I spent a few hours trying to troubleshoot several codes that have come up recently using my BMW Scanner/PA Soft as well as my Foxwell.

One of them was error code “61 Steering angle adjustment necessary” which I believe came up in the DSC or ABS module, but never triggered a trifecta or Check Engine Light (CEL). I tried but could not reset the code. I turned the wheel lock to lock while watching BMW Scanner's live data, and I did not see any dead spots, but I have no idea if the numbers are good. (I did write them down if that is helpful to know.)

After fiddling with it for a while I "performed an LEW adaptation" which finally made the code go away away. Then, on my next trip, I had the ABS light and the DSC light (the round one on the center of the dash) come on. It did not trip the check engine light.

I was able to check codes with the Foxwell afterwards (no time to get BMW scanner out) and it appears that the Foxwell cannot see the DSC module. However, it did see "Error OE Steering Angle Implausible" on the LEW module.

Is there a way to recalibrate or resynchronize the steering angle sensor with either the Foxwell or BMW Scanner/PA Soft? Thanks in advance...

Note: AfterI reset the error 0E in the LEW module, it did NOT get rid of the ABS or the DSC lights on the dash. Forgot to mention that above.

It sounds like you did something wrong when you recalibrated the steering angle, maybe re-check that carefully.

I didn't recalibrate the steering angle ever.

So maybe try it?

Lock to lock two or three times usually does it...

Like I mentioned above, I do not know how to recalibrate the steering angle sensor.

I did turn the steering wheel lock to lock on the drive today. Should the dash lights instantly disappear or would that happen on the next drive cycle if I performed it correctly?

The lock to lock thing is the calibration. Yeah, in my cases (like after every battery pull/change etc.) the lights (4x4 light only?) goes out after I've driven a few hundred meters....

*edit* - looks like you can also do a center calibration with the Foxwell.

I had trifecta lights on and had the steering wheel calibration done at a shop to clear it. I had just replaced the ABS module, but 3 lights didn't go off until recalibration was done. They also checked the alignment in the process.

I tried the lock to lock hack several times, but it didn't have any effect.

I was going to pickup an INPA cable and download the SW but I've got too many irons in the fire at the moment. I thought you could do the calibration with a Foxwell. Perhaps its dependent on the version of scanner you have... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLgLQ0JRfCk
