Tips on how to get frozen driver's door on 2003 BMW X5 3.0i to open from outside?

Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the holiday season. Yesterday, I went to my E53 2003 BMW X5 3.0i and tried to open the driver's door, but from the outside, it would not let me open it. It was also 8 degrees outside (absolutely freezing).

However, I was able to get the front door to eventually open by going into the car through the passenger door and pushing the driver's door inner knob outward, which opened the front driver's door. But, what's strange is that the front driver's door exterior knob itself goes outward too when trying to open the door from the outside, but something is causing the front driver's door to still not open at all from the outside ultimately.

I tried spraying WD-40 as well as De-Icer on the front door's handle, but I still have not had any luck. Oddly enough, all other 3 doors + the trunk, despite it being freezing outside, were eventually able to open from both the inside and outside of the car. The car was turned on too when trying to open the front driver's door from the outside.

Does anyone have any other tips as to how I can essentially get my frozen front driver's door to open from the outside of the car?

Obviously do not yank on handle…it will break.

Once you get door latch to release, you can pry the door open with your fingers - or try to.
Spray silicone on rubber door seals to reduce this in future.

Also spray brake cleaner into side latch as well as thru gaps in handle - preferable when it’s above freezing.. Then spray silicone in the same areas to reduce the chance of latches freezing up…nothing’s worse when it’s 10 degrees or colder and you can't get the E53 door to latch close…happened to me last night.

Really just time. Moisture got in the mechanism of that door. You could sit there with a hairdryer to warm it up. I would not get more involved than that in this weather.

I have the same problem. There is a write up on ice forming on a rivet in the latch mechanism. I take a gallon of hot water and run it on the area around the handle but avoid hitting the lock area. I can hear a distinct small click when the latch is ready to work. If I plan on making a short stop somewhere, I bring a thermos of hot water. I replaced the latch with a used one and so far haven’t had the problem.

Very common problem with lot's of info here and elsewhere about it. I would take a heat gun and do mine. I am traveling and took my Lexus just for this reason. Didn't wanted to be stranded with the door locked or not latching once you get in. Have had both problems in the past. I have also used a propane torch, carefully of course.
