Taillight difference

I wanted to order New taillight in smoke version.
Now I see 2 different versions.

What is the difference besides the long and short white rear stripe...

I think all factory tails (from all model years) have the short reverse light lens.

The longer version appears to be after-market only.

Without knowing what your source is, who can say. BUT... there is a tail and brake bulb configuration (and wiring) difference between pre-LCI (up to 09/03) and LCI cars.

Pre-LCI cars use a dual filament tail bulbs (5W/21W, a P21/5) while LCI cars use a single filament bulbs (21W, a P21W).

similar question, excuse the interruption

I hate to barge into another's thread, but I never saw it until I was looking at my taillight lenses today. They are both in great shape, and probably original.

On the other end, my headlight assemblies are mis-matched (I never noticed it before, despite laboring for a long time clearing the lenses, almost two years ago). One side has a clear turn signal lens, while the other is amber.

I've never driven it at night, nor have done a walk-around when the headlights & parking lights were on (I check brake lights & turn signals periodically, though). You'd think I'd have noticed the difference, but it didn't register...I'm an old fart, blind in one eye and can't see out the other, I guess.

So, which lens color is correct for my '01 model (with halogens)? It matters not to me, as long as they work.

The solid amber headlight is the correct headlight for your X5.
