I should have used more definable terms.
Always plug in a scanner then turn the key to on or run depending on what you are seeking. Clearing codes when running leaves the car open to bricking the modules if the process locks up. Most modules will not two way communicate if the engines is running as it is a built in safe guard. Can you get info from systems if the engine is operating? YES
As posted multiple times over on the M5 forum, uninformed operators doing multiple things at one time, always have major consequences.
Connect, scan, Read, clear, then monitor systems when running. Simple

On the subject of battery voltage while scanning or coding. Always have the vehicle on a 5 amp or greater amp charger while working. Why? Because if the battery voltage drops below 10 v the process will stall. If you are coding the system it can be locked forever in between selections. Read that as bricking your module.

Bottom line: do your research first on what you are trying to do. Then proceed.
Somewhere there is a complete list of what can be cleared, modified and or selected on our vehicles.

Now I have to research where to find the Auto Unlock/lock for key fobs and the point of vehicle speed for the auto lock. Plus need to turn off the “hold lock button to open front windows 2”, as the wife manages to do this in her purse weekly on cars she is NOT or will not be driving. Welcome to the 24 pound key fob that women always seem to desire to carry in their purses then loose them frequently. Oh I mean misplaced: still in the front door key hole, left where she placed her gloves, shoes, jacket , or groceries. Why why why? It a girl thing, guys aren’t designed to know the mysterious ways a females brain works.
I personally think it comes from playing with dry cleaner plastic bags as a child. Lol
