Which particular Foxwell scanner can do this - transfer case reset. I changed the plastic gear in the actuator, but every now and then I get the 54C6 code- transfer case oil wear error code, would like to be able to reset that, and stop these dam lights from coming on. Mine is the E70 3.0si, so Im assuming these codes are consistent across the E53 and the E70.

Codes may be the same across the e70 and e53 platforms but as far as I know, on the e53 this particular code doesn't set any lights off - you can only read the code from the error menu.

Not sure which is the best Foxwell but the NT510/520/530 series seem popular in here...

Thanks I will go huntin for one. I have bimmercode and bimmerlink, plus INPA, but none of these seem able to reset the transfer oil wear code, its a bloody nuisance...

Silly question... you did (or will ) change the VTG oil, right?

Not a silly question at all, but not yet, have the fluid, and have to go buy one of those 14mm hex drivers to do the drain etc. I wanted to have me ducks in a row before I had a crack at it. I did the seals and trans fluid on the mechatronic last year which sorted the shifting, now need to do this, probably should have done the whole lot at the same time...I thought the code may have gone after I did the plastic gear, but nup, seems like the oil wear is the next thing. But to do that, I need to do a reset of the TC. I downloaded ISTA and INPA just not confident of using either of them.

Nt-510 or nt-520 the 530 doesn't lunk with everything in the e53 but if I recall correctly it is fine for the e70.

Best bet is the Nt-510 elite

A Foxwell NT520 Pro is what I used to transfer case adaptation. Twice actually. Once when I bought it and replaced the gear. Second time after changing the oil.

Not sure if you need to run the adaptation routine when only replacing the gear., since the VTG does a form of calibration at each shutdown.

From the TIS: -

When terminal 15 is OFF, a calibration sequence is performed. During this calibration sequence, a certain angle setting of the VTG actuator motor has a corresponding locking torque assigned. The effects of wear are also taken into account when this is done.

The multi-plate clutch is closed fully and separated once during this calibration sequence. When this happens, the current draw is measured at the respective angle setting of the VTG actuator motor. This determines the beginning and end of the closing movement for the multi-plate clutch. The angle setting is recorded by means of the integral incremental sensor in the VTG actuator motor. These values are stored and are used as data when the car restarts.

There ARE other references in the TIS to running the routine after working on the actuator (Perform "Servomotor repair" service function) but a simple gear change (without removing the motor from the actuator assembly) shouldn't affect the calibration.

Interesting. Good information.

On the subject, how long to transfer case clutches last?

I've read xdrive goes to 2WD above 115 MPH! I've yet to pass a short burst of 95 MPH. The drive line can handle it. It's the cooling system that has me worried. A refresh is coming soon.
