Sudden alarm failure

Hi. 2004 X5 3.0 with 300,000km suddenly started wailing the alarm last night. Disarm and re-arm and it went off again. Tried opening and closing all doors and re-arming only to go off again.

Never has done this before. I was a bit annoyed so I left it unlocked on the street for the rest of the night.

One symptom I did notice, when arming, the clown nose on the rear view mirror blinked quickly a few times before setting into the normal flash every 4ish seconds. I didn't count the quick flashes. Maybe a clue?

TIA for any tips.

I had a lot of problems with the hood sensor tripping the alarm randomly. I disconnected it and never had the problem again. But that always happened in the hot sun on hot days.

Have you pulled codes? Also I think you can interpret those blinks on the clown nose -- Qsilver will probably produce the correct SOP for doing so, or you can try Google.

Sounds like the hood switch - just disconnect it until you can replace it. I used a cheap aftermarket switch that works WAY better than a defective OE switch...

Good plan. Tonight it armed without extra light flashes, and stayed silent. Switch may well be intermittent.

Very high probability that it is the hood switch. Mine failed at a police checkpoint when they closed the hood hard. Totally not nerve wracking while in the middle of the road, surrounded by five poorly trained cops armed with AMD-65's....

Is there any problem leaving it disconnected ?

Will it cause the anti-theft system to stop working ?

If it's just a wonky switch you can put a bulldog clip or tape on it if you don't want to keep it unplugged.

Nope. The alarm will still work perfectly fine, just if someone opens your hood and steals your engine the alarm won't go off.

Personally, if someone steals my high-mileage M54, I hope they take the cooling system and CCV

Here's a chart that indicates what the BMW DWA Status Flashing means:

Here's a description of BMW's DWA (anti-theft alarm siren system):
