Fitting Comfort Air Bags at rear instead of Sport?

K everyone probably fed up of me now, air springs sorry i said aibags before they are deflated gone in X5, it is the sports package and sports suspension, coil springs up front, air bags at rear and is self levelling.

bmw confirmed the correct part numbers (but they are asking exhorbitant prices) , BUT what if I opt for the comfort line alternatives at rear by Arnott? will they fit? i pressed the aftermarket sales guy and he said this is what we have listed for your car when i gave him my chassis.....but if they don't fit I will be stuffed. I have even emailed arnott, despite seeing in an old post from 2010 a note about the comfort and sport line of bags on X5 being interchangeable....

I checked the specs but only found package size, seems the comfort are 1cm longer than the sport and width 0.5cm wider that maybe an issue, but that is going by dimensions of packaging....

What's the purpose of again opening multiple threads about the same case. If you want to change angle of the conversation you can edit the thread title.

Airbag is for protecting people Ina crash. Air spring is for holding up a car.

I believe the original thread was asking about changing air to coil this one is asking a very different question about if the non sport air spring will work in a sport built chassis.

Since they are definitely different part numbers it's a valid question. Also a valid question: why bother? Softer ride? Unless you also change the shocks I doubt you'll feel the difference.

@Andrewwynn and Clavurion yes sorry i have digressed gone forth and multiplied, cut long story short, nope not going from air bag springs to coil springs at rear, been advised by you an many of the trouble and cost, but as you say I am querying the efficacy of going from current sport rear buggered airbags to comfort ones (and yes I have a sport packet X5) and if the changeover is possible ie are parts gonna fit. Why? well I cant wait to get the sports type shipped over, the are not on offer locally and the stealer is out of my price bracket.....so can i get away with the comfort ones at rear....cheers

https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-1...t-rear-e53-x5/

https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3...r-spring-left/

Comparing the photos for the indexing pins etc they look the same.

If I was your position I'd get the more available springs. Also the failure point on these has always been right were the spring folds and you could prob get a week or three of working springs with a healthy doss of super glue at the crease where it's leaking.( If leaking where it's also pressed on by the internal cone structure).

1.Really appreciate your feedback and patience, dunno what gets over me when the X5 goes wrong?!!!!!

Arnott lady still tells me not advisable to install the comforts and go for the ones that come with car....things is if it weren't for forum and you chaps and realoem I wouldn't be querying this at all......either way just hope that if mechanic bungs in the comforts i wont get any right height sensor related errors as Arnott lady suggested...

Arnott rep is just guessing. The car has no way to know what model spring is installed. There's a tiny chance BMW did something strange like put a different connector so you couldn't accidentally put in the "wrong" spring but then change the connector.

Checking the air pipe it doesn't list a different part for the sport model.

Will do,piping running into the top of sprint is not listed and is greyed out as an item number, its part of the RP air supply as whole and hmm alas there are 2 different part numbers one for 220a self levelling and one for 221a the 2 axle selflevelling. BUT going by one online sales place who has been at it selling them for 13 years monica is 100% they are identical and will fit....(ok inner gubbins may differ sport=stiffer) but as a fit should be ok as as per posts here seen couple of persons go the other way from comfort to sports you see?

Pro tip; even "deflated" they are hard to pull out. Razor knife to puncture makes them much easier to get out. The new one should come compressed so much easier to fit. It is one of the easiest jobs there is on a car.

Fella wish i had the ramps space so on so forth to try, alas gotta take it to mechanic who give em credit have been good so far apart from one time no fault of their own and i was witness to this they were delivered a starter motor that just would not fit! even after taking a grinder to it etc etc they got me to return it to store and i was blacklisted as returned item was tarnished to say they least! but hey they insisted it was ok as a fit, so you see my reasons for concern when they said the same regarding the air springs they have at hand the arnott comfort ones!
